Newly Qualified ATT

ATT Qualified? Here’s What Comes Next

Congratulations. Passing your ATT exams is a significant achievement.

It shows commitment, technical ability and the discipline to get through a demanding qualification while building your career in tax.

The question now is simple: what do you want this qualification to do for you?

For some people, the next step is staying with their current employer, taking on more responsibility and building towards CTA. For others, qualification is the point where they start to question whether they are in the right firm, the right team, or even the right area of tax.

There is no single correct answer. But this is a sensible time to pause, review your options and understand what the market may offer.

What Should You Be Thinking About?

After qualifying, it is worth asking yourself a few practical questions.

Are you getting enough technical development?

Do you have access to the type of clients and work that will help you progress?

Is there a clear path towards promotion?

Are you being paid fairly for your level of experience?

Do you want to specialise, broaden your tax exposure, or move into a different environment?

These questions matter because the early years after qualification can shape the direction of your career. A good move can accelerate your development. Staying in the wrong environment for too long can slow it down.

What Are Your Options?

Stay in Practice

For many newly qualified ATT professionals, practice remains the best place to build strong technical foundations.

Accountancy firms continue to value ATT-qualified tax professionals across personal tax, corporate tax, private client, VAT, trusts, employment tax and mixed tax roles.

Depending on the firm, you may be able to specialise further, take on more advisory work, support more complex clients, or start building towards CTA.

The key is whether your current role is still developing you.

Move to a Different Firm

Sometimes the issue is not tax itself, but the structure around you.

A different firm may offer better training, clearer progression, broader advisory exposure, better quality clients, or a more supportive team.

This is often where newly qualified ATT professionals can make a meaningful step forward, especially if they have outgrown the work they are currently doing.

Move In-House

Some tax professionals choose to move into industry, working within the tax or finance team of a company rather than advising external clients.

This can offer a closer view of how tax decisions affect a business, and may suit those who want to work with one organisation in more depth.

For others, gaining in-house experience can be a useful career chapter before returning to practice later.

Try Something More Specialist

ATT qualification can also open doors into more specialist areas, including niche tax consultancies, law firms, family offices, private client boutiques, international tax teams, or offshore jurisdictions.

If you already know which type of work interests you most, this can be a good time to position yourself in that direction.

What Are You Worth?

Salary levels vary depending on location, firm size, tax specialism, exam progress, client exposure and the level of responsibility you already have.

Rather than relying on generic salary bands, it is usually more useful to benchmark your position against comparable roles in the current market.

We can help you understand whether your salary is competitive and what similar ATT-qualified professionals are achieving across practice, industry and specialist tax firms.
