Job description

You have won a competition for a watch. They have presented you with two watches to choose from – a Casio or a Patek Philippe watch. Which would you choose?

I’m guessing you’d choose the latter and the reason for that is glaringly obvious. These watches are unsurpassed in their aesthetic and mechanical perfection. However, this perfection was only ever achieved due to the specialisation of its founders, dedication and passion.

This same logic is equally valid when applied to tax and R&D. The R&D process is highly nuanced and it is the oversight of this fact that has led so many firms to flounder in the maze of R&D.  Not this firm. This firm’s specialisation and experience has allowed them to double their turnover year on year. Many of their current team left Big 4 and Top 10 firms to work for this consultancy. They did so because they wanted a greater level of freedom, responsibility and to share in the profits generated by their hard work.

What will your first year look like?

In the first three months in post, your only concern will be settling in and learning the ropes of your new position. Following this, you shall begin to build your individual client base. You shall make sure that your clients are well looked after, that all work is maintained at a high standard and targets are achieved. You won’t be micromanaged in this firm so ensuring that these criteria are met is completely up to you!

A high level of responsibility

Unlike larger firms, where you may only deal with one large client for months on end with limited responsibility, here you would have exposure to a range for clients and have a high level of client responsibility. This shall grant you greater experience in the sector, allowing you to perfect your technical skills and allowing you to develop as a professional.

What does a typical project look like?

You take an incoming call from a prospective client and set up a meeting at their offices. You personally attend the initial meeting with the client (along with senior staff) and take charge of the project. You ask a lot of questions to get an understanding of your client and collect, compile and analyse the relevant financial data. You write a detailed R&D report in line with R&D tax legislation and guidelines and demonstrate the saving you can make your client.  Finally, you call your client (once you have successfully concluded things with HMRC) and tell them the good news!

It’s challenging work – we won’t shy away from that fact and we hope you won’t either.

However, you will never struggle on your own here. This firm have an outstanding training programme in place consisting of fourteen modules on the technical aspects of R&D, client service and risk management. After participating in the scheme, you will then have an opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt in a client setting. In addition, they have an extraordinarily open and supportive team where you are able to talk and share ideas with professionals at all levels.

If you think this role is perfect for you, and I hope you do, hit the apply button.
