R&D Consultant, London
Job description
So why should I work here?
Simply, you will gain the best experience. This consultancy has differentiated itself in the market, specialising in the most complex projects and claims under the RDEC scheme. Their only competition for this type of complex work comes from the Big 4, but even they price themselves out of a lot of the interesting work.
And what does the consultancy look like?
Both the founders of this consultancy worked at other R&D consultancies in the past. They noticed that with growth, a lot of consultancies become a lot more like factories – consultants might be trained on only parts of the claim, be exposed to only one sector or be given such tight deadlines that if they are unsure whether an activity will constitute R&D, they will discount it.
This consultancy strives to be the complete opposite of that. They have positioned themselves to seek the R&D that others firms feel they cannot handle or don’t have time to research. This also means that they have invested a lot in building up the team on all aspects of claims so that they can manage the process from the cradle to the grave.
What would I be doing?
Your role will see you manage a portfolio of about 15-20 clients under both the SME and RDEC schemes. These clients will be of ranging complexity and at different stages of their claim. You will be managing expectations, holding and directing the technical meetings to gather all of the information you need, draft technical reports, complete the calculations, submit reports and answer any queries from HMRC.
Your other responsibilities will be to assists on the largest claims that the directors are handling to boost your exposure as it is hoped that as you progress, you will be able to take on larger and larger claims. You might also be managing the junior consultant on certain projects to prepare you for a managerial position in the future.
So what else?
The firm has a great work-life balance. When speaking with the director, I asked whether the team often work late, and she half laughed as she replied that bags are packed, and the team are out the door by 5:30pm. This was supported by one of the consultants who said they work with directors to have achievable deadlines, and they try to factor in anything that will slow progress so that they will never have a crunch time where they need to work late. She also said they are extremely sociable – one of the senior consultants is the social secretary of the consultancy and keeps the team on their toes with a myriad of outings such as trampolining, escape rooms, dinners and theatre trips.
They also provide comprehensive training so you will never feel out of your depth and support qualifications.
Okay, I’m sold. What are they looking for?
To apply for the role, you will need 2-3 years working on R&D tax relief and an up to date CV.
